Our Trip to Canterbury Museum

On Thursday 29th July we visited the Canterbury Museum.
Here we are in the Discovery Area. There were lots of birds to discover!

Anthony talked to use about 'endemic' New Zealand birds. Did you know that the Moa is the only known bird not to have any wings? We also saw a replica of a pouakai or Haast eagle - it was enormous - the moa and the eagle became extinct at about the same time. Can you remember why?

Here we are drawing birds in the bird gallery.

We got to touch different birds and look really closely at their beaks and their feet.

In the Antacrtic Gallery we found that some birds like the penguin have adapted really well to their harsh habitat. They huddle together working as a team to keep each other warm and take it in turns to be in the middle. Their feathers are very small and bushy almost like fur and they are oily, like a waterproof coat!

What a wonderful day we had learning about birds. We impressed all the adults too, with how much we already know about our special New Zealand birds and how enthusiastic we are about our topic. Well done Room 13.
Thanks to Sue and Jane for all their help too looking after us and giving us lots of information.
